Welcome to the Initiative for Civility in Everyday Life

We are all interconnected in one way or another, and we believe we have an obligation to help ourselves and each other to be our best selves.  The Initiative for Civility in Everyday Life (ICEL) offers a variety of different programs and opportunities for us all to excel in this mission.  Three frameworks guide what we do:  that we all are entitled to the provision and protection of human rights, the  essentiality of compassion, and the importance of belonging and mattering – to ourselves, those we live with, and for the communities we create.   We look forward to being your partner as we work together to build caring relationships and civic infrastructures as thoughtfully as we would bridges or gardens.

A Guide to Our Initiatives

We have many different initiatives and partnerships.  Check some of them out!

Human Rights

We provide materials, resources, consultations and education in a variety of forms to best meet people’s needs, from individuals, families, schools, organizations, governments, and other groups.  Respecting one another’s rights is the perfect place to start caring for ourselves and others. Check out some of our programs and ways we can help you to help yourself and others.
THE WORLD AS IT COULD BE

The World As It The World As It Could Be Human Rights Education Program (TWAICB) is an outgrowth of a series of successful initiatives carried out since 2006 to inspire people of all ages to take actions, large and small, that lead to equality, justice and dignity for all. These initiatives use the creative arts to deepen learning about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR); they give participating youth the voice to teach their peers and adults about the importance of the UDHR principles. https://www.theworldasitcouldbe.org/

TRAINING FOR EXCELLENCE

We conduct trainings to create a course for making a dream come true – a dream about improving the lives of those we serve, a dream about helping our employees to become excellent professionals,  a dream about how we want our lives or businesses to evolve.  http://training4excellence.com/

LIBRARY GUIDES

We have created two comprehensive library guides that are full of resources for you to use that will empower you to “hit the ground running” with state-of-the-art materials, films, curricula, websites, and ideas to inspire yourself and others about the wonderfulness of a human rights approach to life.

Go to  this free Canvas “course” and sign up and you will access hundreds of different materials about a wide array of human rights materials, especially as they pertain to children, youth, and young adults – https://canvas.instructure.com/enroll/GLKDXX

  COMPASSION

Being compassionate means being caring and kind to ourselves and to others.  We all have suffered and longed for people to love and understand us. We all feel sad, bad, mad, and upset at times, but resorting to violence is not a way to resolve those unpleasant emotions.  This means unpacking our own histories, stories, and emotions to become more compassionate to ourselves!

MEDIATION

We are trained mediators who have worked with families, organizations, schools, and communities who are experiencing crises.  Using a specialized dialogue and problem-solving strategy, we can help you to resolve challenges in a positive framework that can lead towards successful future interactions.

STRATEGIC PLANNING & RESEARCH

Often people get upset and confused about what the best course of action should be.  As seasoned researchers, we know that good data shines a light on best practices.  Let us design an excellent research strategy so you can plan for success!

THREADS

We are embarking on a new project on how people heal after they have had a broken heart.  Let us hear your stories of times you’ve had your heart broken and how you have mended it.

MUCK

Life regularly gives us messes, or muck, that we have to get rid of – otherwise if we don’t, it can make us sick or really cause more problems for us!  Our Muck model of getting rid of the messes in your life will be available later in 2024!

 BELONGING

Each one of us is born with gifts and talents.  We are all stars that want to shine our light into the world.  But often we are left out, alone, and feel like we don’t matter.  It is important to our health, and the health of our families and communities, that we all have opportunities to participate.  Belonging is a human need.  We help to cultivate that through the following programs.  Talk to us about how we can help initiate new ways for everyone to have a seat at the table!

Civic Health and Community Dialogue Research

From Portland Maine to Seattle Washington, and from Minnesota to Florida, we have conducted community dialogues and research on community problems and how to build community health through research, advocacy, and partnerships.  Talk to us about this innovative work that helps bring communities together!

Homelessness, Housing Hunger, and Poverty Innovations

Having a home where we can be safe is essential to our health and happiness, and that of the community.  Authors of many publications and work on these types of preventable distress, we are happy to work with you to initiative better policies and practices to serve all members of the community

JEDI

The topics of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion have become major business and education concepts.  We all want to matter and belong.  We can use the JEDI frame to help bring people and organizations together, not rip us apart.

We have many more programs on all of these!  This list is just to inspire you to consider new ways of innovating to make our lives better!
